Dr. Can Özer boasts a distinguished career in the field of cardiology, marked by an illustrious journey of medical expertise and pioneering contributions to the domain. Graduating from Ankara University Diyarbakır Faculty of Medicine in 1974, he swiftly embarked on a trajectory of medical excellence. His initial years were punctuated with diverse experiences, including passing the Internal Medicine Specialist Exam and fulfilling his military service in Cyprus from 1974 to 1976.
Earning his Internal Medicine Specialization from Ankara Hospital in 1980 marked a pivotal milestone in his professional journey. Subsequently, Dr. Özer delved deeper into cardiology, entering the Cardiology Clinic of Turkey Higher Specialization Hospital (TYİH). Here, under the guidance of Dr. Kemal Bayazıt, he advanced his expertise, becoming a Cardiology Specialist in 1984. Demonstrating an early commitment to innovative practices, he introduced percutaneous mitral and pulmonary balloon valvuloplasty techniques in the clinic.
Dr. Özer's pursuits led him to the United States in 1987, supported by a TÜBİTAK scholarship, to enrich his knowledge in Percutan Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA). His training with Dr. Ümit Aker in St. Louis proved invaluable, enabling him to integrate this advanced technique into his clinical practice upon his return to Turkey.
His tenure at TYİH Cardiology Clinic was marked by remarkable achievements, culminating in his appointment as an Associate Professor in 1988. His pioneering spirit led him to concentrate on interventional cardiology, spearheading groundbreaking applications like atherectomy and rotablator techniques. Dr. Özer was instrumental in popularizing stent applications and disseminating his expertise through training programs.
He played a pivotal role in establishing the Güven Hospital Catheter and Hemodynamics Laboratory, a testament to his commitment to advancing cardiac care in Turkey. Dr. Özer's unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence led him to various leadership positions, including roles as Head of the Cardiology Department and Deputy General Manager at Bayındır Hospital.
His leadership was integral in re-establishing the Bayındır Hospital Medical Awards, affirming the institution's commitment to contributing to the scientific community. Despite a busy schedule, he remained committed to advancing cardiac care until his departure from Bayındır Hospital in May 2019.
