Mammogram (Oncology)

Mammography is an essential screening test that is used to detect breast cancer at an early stage. It is a low-dose X-ray imaging method that provides detailed images of the breast tissue. A mammogram can identify lumps, abnormal growths, or changes in the breast tissue that may not be visible or palpable during a physical exam. Early detection of breast cancer through mammography can increase the chances of successful treatment and survival rates.

Mammography is a simple and safe procedure that involves compressing the breast tissue between two plates to obtain a clear image. The patient stands in front of the mammography machine, and the breast is positioned on the plate by a technologist. The plate then compresses the breast for a few seconds to capture the image. Two views of each breast are taken, one from the top and one from the side. Some women may experience slight discomfort or pain during the procedure, but it only lasts for a few seconds.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women aged 40 and above should undergo mammography every year. Women who have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need to start screening earlier or undergo additional tests, such as ultrasound or MRI. Mammography is a crucial tool for early detection of breast cancer, but it is not foolproof. Women should also perform self-breast exams regularly and seek medical attention if they notice any unusual changes in their breasts.
