Calcium Score Scan: A Non-Invasive Test for Heart Disease
Feb 28, 2023
HEALTH,INSIGHTSA calcium score scan, also known as a coronary calcium scan, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses computed tomography (CT) imaging to measure the amount of calcium buildup in the coronary arteries.
Calcium Score Scan: A Non-Invasive Test for Heart Disease
A calcium score scan is a non-invasive test that uses low-dose X-rays to measure the amount of calcium in the coronary arteries. Calcium deposits are a sign of atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque in the arteries that can lead to heart disease.
The calcium score scan is a relatively new test, but it has been shown to be a good predictor of coronary artery disease. A high calcium score indicates a higher risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular events.
Benefits of Calcium Score Scans
- Non-invasive and painless
- Relatively quick and easy to perform
- Can be used to detect coronary artery disease in people at increased risk
- Can be used to monitor the progression of coronary artery disease over time
Risks of Calcium Score Scans
- Can give false positives
- Can miss some cases of coronary artery disease
- Exposes the patient to low-dose radiation
Who Should Get a Calcium Score Scan?
- People who are at increased risk for coronary artery disease, such as those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease
- People who have already had a heart attack or other cardiovascular event
- People who are considering undergoing other tests for coronary artery disease, such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or coronary angiography
How Is a Calcium Score Scan Performed?
The patient lies on a table and is exposed to low-dose X-rays for about 10 minutes. The X-rays are used to create a three-dimensional image of the heart and coronary arteries. The computer then calculates the amount of calcium in the arteries.
What Do the Results of a Calcium Score Scan Mean?
The results of the calcium score scan are given as a number called an Agatston score. The Agatston score ranges from 0 to 400. A score of 0 means that there is no calcium in the arteries. A score of 1 to 100 indicates a low risk of coronary artery disease. A score of 101 to 400 indicates a moderate to high risk of coronary artery disease.
Calcium Score Scans and Treatment
A high calcium score does not necessarily mean that you will have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event. However, it does indicate that you are at an increased risk for these events. If you have a high calcium score, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. Your doctor may also recommend medication to lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar.
Calcium Score Scans and Early Detection
Calcium score scans are a valuable tool for early detection of coronary artery disease. Early detection and treatment can help to reduce the risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular events.
If you have any questions about calcium score scans, please talk to your doctor.
