Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is used to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions affecting the joints, including the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, and ankle. The procedure involves making a small incision and inserting a thin, flexible tube called an arthroscope into the joint. This allows the surgeon to view the inside of the joint on a monitor and perform any necessary repairs.

The arthroscopy procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the complexity of the case. During the procedure, the joint is inflated with a sterile saline solution to provide better visualization of the internal structures. The surgeon then uses tiny instruments to remove damaged tissue, repair tears, or reshape bones.

One of the main benefits of arthroscopy is that it is a minimally invasive procedure, which means that there is less tissue damage and a faster recovery time compared to traditional open surgery. Additionally, arthroscopy allows the surgeon to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions with a single procedure, reducing the need for multiple surgeries. After the procedure, patients will typically need to wear a brace or cast to immobilize the joint and allow it to heal. Physical therapy may also be necessary to help improve range of motion and regain strength in the affected joint.
