Op. Dr. Murat Üstün, born in Istanbul in 1969, is a prominent figure in the field of bariatric surgery with a career spanning over 21 years and over 8000 successful surgeries. He graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and became a General Surgery Specialist in 1996. Dr. Üstün developed a keen interest in laparoscopy early in his career, particularly during his time at SSK Ankara Education and Research Hospital, which was a leading center for laparoscopy in Turkey.
Throughout his career, Dr. Üstün has been committed to advancing laparoscopic surgical techniques. He played a key role in establishing a transplantation clinic at SSK Ankara Specialization Hospital and later established the first laparoscopic surgery unit at SSK Zonguldak Regional Hospital. Dr. Üstün's dedication to modernizing operating rooms and establishing sterilization principles has had a lasting impact on the field.
In 2001, Dr. Üstün transitioned to the private health sector in Istanbul, where he continued to excel in laparoscopic surgery. His interest in information technology led him to work as a project coordinator for DrCAD medical software, aimed at providing online diagnosis support to family physicians.
Dr. Üstün's career took a pivotal turn towards obesity surgery in 2004 when he worked with Dr. Vincent Frering on laparoscopic bariatric surgery in France. Since then, he has worked in various centers in France and visited several other centers in Europe and North America to enhance his expertise in bariatric surgery.
In addition to his surgical accomplishments, Dr. Üstün has been actively involved in sharing his knowledge and expertise with others. He has conducted numerous workshops and training sessions, training approximately 35 surgeons in obesity surgery. Dr. Üstün is also known for his use of advanced technology in surgery, including the first use of staples with I-drive battery in gastric sleeve surgery and the first use of V-Loc suture in obesity surgery.
