Sleep ApneaSleep apnea is a common yet serious sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the upper airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, leading to pauses in breathing that can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. This disruption in breathing can cause a person to wake up repeatedly throughout the night, leading to fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and a host of other health issues. There are three main types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and complex, each with its own unique causes and symptoms.
One of the most common treatments for sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. This involves wearing a mask over the nose and/or mouth during sleep, which delivers a continuous flow of air to keep the airway open. While CPAP therapy is highly effective, some people find it uncomfortable or inconvenient to use. For these individuals, surgery may be an option. The most common surgical procedure for sleep apnea is called uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), which involves removing excess tissue from the throat and soft palate to widen the airway. Other surgical options include maxillomandibular advancement (MMA), which involves moving the jaw forward, and tracheostomy, which involves creating a hole in the neck to bypass the blocked airway.
In addition to medical treatments, there are several lifestyle changes that can help alleviate sleep apnea symptoms. These include losing weight, avoiding alcohol and sedatives, quitting smoking, sleeping on your side instead of your back, and keeping your nasal passages open with saline sprays or nasal dilators. By taking a proactive approach to managing their sleep apnea, many people are able to improve their quality of life and reduce their risk of associated health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
