RLE - Refractive Lens ExchangeRefractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by removing the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure is typically performed on patients who are not good candidates for LASIK or other laser eye surgeries. RLE is often recommended for patients over the age of 40 who have developed presbyopia, a condition that causes difficulty in seeing objects up close.
During RLE surgery, a small incision is made in the cornea and the natural lens of the eye is removed using an ultrasound probe. A foldable IOL is then inserted through the same incision and unfolded into the eye. The IOL is specifically chosen to provide the patient with the best visual outcome based on their individual prescription and preferences. The entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia with sedation.
RLE is a safe and effective procedure with a high success rate in correcting refractive errors and reducing dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Patients generally experience improved vision soon after the surgery, with a full recovery within a few weeks. Like any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications associated with RLE, such as infection, bleeding, and vision loss, but these are rare. It is important for patients to discuss the benefits and risks of RLE with their ophthalmologist and have a thorough eye examination to determine if they are a suitable candidate for the procedure
