PDT - Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that utilizes a combination of a photosensitive drug and a specific wavelength of light to destroy cancer cells and other abnormal cells in the body. The photosensitive drug is injected into the body and accumulates in the targeted cells. Once the cells have absorbed the drug, a light of a particular wavelength is applied to the area, activating the drug and causing the cells to die. Photodynamic therapy has proven effective in treating a variety of medical conditions, including skin cancer, esophageal cancer, and certain types of lung cancer.

During the operation, the photosensitive drug is first administered to the patient. Depending on the type of cancer being treated and its location, the drug may be given orally or through an intravenous injection. The drug is designed to be absorbed by the cancer cells and remain inactive until activated by the appropriate wavelength of light. After a period of time, the area to be treated is exposed to a specific wavelength of light using a specialized light source. The light activates the photosensitive drug, which then destroys the targeted cells.
