IUI - Intrauterine Insemination

Intrauterine insemination, commonly referred to as IUI, is a fertility treatment that involves placing washed and concentrated sperm directly into a woman's uterus. The procedure is timed to coincide with ovulation, increasing the chances of fertilization. IUI is often recommended for couples who have been trying to conceive for a year without success, or for those who have specific fertility issues such as low sperm count or cervical mucus problems. IUI is less invasive and less expensive than in vitro fertilization (IVF) and can be performed with or without fertility drugs.

During an IUI procedure, a healthcare provider will insert a small catheter through the cervix and into the uterus, delivering the prepared sperm directly into the uterus. The process is typically quick and relatively painless, similar to a Pap smear. Prior to the procedure, the sperm is collected from a male partner or a sperm donor and prepared in a laboratory to concentrate and remove any potential toxins or bacteria. The woman may be given fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation, increasing the chances of success. After the procedure, the woman may be advised to lie down for a short time to improve the chances of the sperm fertilizing the egg.

While IUI can be an effective treatment for some couples struggling with infertility, it is important to note that success rates vary depending on individual factors such as age, overall health, and the reason for infertility. Additionally, IUI is not a suitable treatment for those with severe male infertility, tubal blockages, or other significant reproductive issues. It is recommended that couples speak with a healthcare provider to determine if IUI is the best option for their individual situation.
