Gastric Band

Gastric band, also known as Lap Band, is a type of bariatric surgery that involves the placement of an adjustable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. The gastric band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach, which restricts the amount of food that can be eaten at one time. The size of the pouch can be adjusted by adding or removing saline solution through a port that is placed under the skin.

The operation of gastric band involves a laparoscopic procedure, in which several small incisions are made in the abdomen. A laparoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a camera, is inserted through one of the incisions to guide the placement of the gastric band. The band is then positioned around the upper part of the stomach and secured in place with sutures. The incisions are then closed, and the port for adjusting the size of the pouch is placed under the skin.

Gastric band surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis, and patients can usually go home the same day as the procedure. The surgery is minimally invasive, and patients typically experience a quicker recovery time compared to other types of bariatric surgery. Gastric band is a reversible procedure, which means that the band can be removed if necessary.
