Blastocyst Transfer

Blastocyst transfer is a fertility treatment used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) where an embryo is allowed to develop for five to six days after fertilization, and then transferred to the woman's uterus. This procedure is typically performed when multiple embryos are available, as it allows the fertility specialist to select the embryo with the highest chance of successful implantation. Blastocyst transfer can increase the chances of pregnancy while reducing the likelihood of multiple pregnancies, a common complication of IVF.

During a typical IVF cycle, embryos are transferred to the uterus three days after fertilization. With blastocyst transfer, embryos are cultured in a laboratory for an additional two to three days, allowing them to develop into a more advanced stage known as a blastocyst. At this stage, the embryo consists of around 100 cells and has a small fluid-filled cavity, which helps to nourish the growing cells. The blastocyst is then transferred to the woman's uterus using a thin catheter, a procedure that is typically painless and does not require anesthesia.

Blastocyst transfer offers several advantages over traditional IVF, including higher pregnancy rates, a lower risk of multiple pregnancies, and the ability to select the most viable embryos. However, not all embryos will develop into blastocysts, and some may not survive the additional culture time.
