Treatments
Ankle FusionAnkle fusion, also known as ankle arthrodesis, is a surgical procedure that involves fusing the bones in the ankle joint together to eliminate pain and improve stability. This procedure is typically recommended for individuals who have severe ankle arthritis or have experienced multiple ankle fractures that have not healed properly.
The ankle fusion procedure involves removing the damaged cartilage from the ankle joint and then stabilizing the bones in the joint by using screws, plates, or other devices. The bones are then allowed to grow together, or fuse, to create a single, solid bone. This eliminates any movement between the bones and reduces pain in the joint.
The ankle fusion procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take several hours to complete. After the procedure, patients will need to wear a cast or brace to keep the ankle immobilized while the bones fuse. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help improve range of motion and strengthen the muscles surrounding the ankle. Most individuals who undergo ankle fusion are able to return to normal activities within several months, although full recovery may take up to a year.
