Treatments
Kidney TransplantKidney transplant is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a damaged or non-functioning kidney with a healthy one from a donor. The transplant is performed on people who have end-stage renal disease, which means their kidneys have lost nearly all their function. The procedure can improve their quality of life and extend their lifespan. Kidney transplant surgery is generally safe and effective, but it does require lifelong follow-up care and the use of immunosuppressive medications to prevent rejection of the donor organ.
The operation typically takes about three to four hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdomen and places the healthy donor kidney in the same area. The new kidney's blood vessels are attached to the recipient's blood vessels, and the new ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder) is connected to the recipient's bladder. Once the kidney is in place and the blood flow is restored, the incision is closed, and the patient is taken to the recovery room.
After the surgery, the patient will need to take medications to prevent their body from rejecting the new kidney. They will also need to follow a strict diet, exercise regularly, and monitor their blood pressure and kidney function. Most people can return to work and their normal activities within a few months after the transplant. However, they will need to continue to receive regular medical care and take medications for the rest of their life.
